Tabletop Exercise

THE DEFINITION

A tabletop exercise is a guided discussion of a simulated incident in which participants walk through decisions, roles, and communications without disrupting live systems.

In simple terms

The team receives a scenario and explains what it would do. The goal is to find gaps before a real emergency.

Technical explanation

Facilitators introduce timed facts or injects, record decisions and assumptions, then assign owners to improve plans. A tabletop tests coordination and judgment; it does not prove that technical controls will work in production.

A tabletop presents a plausible scenario and asks participants to make decisions with incomplete information. The useful output is an action list with owners and due dates, not merely attendance.

Examples in practice

Leaders and responders rehearse a ransomware scenario, including who can authorize shutdown and how customers would be informed.

During a simulated supplier breach, leaders learn no one owns customer updates outside business hours. They assign a backup spokesperson and test the contact list in the next exercise.

Why it matters

Exercises expose unclear authority, missing contacts, and recovery dependencies while they are still fixable.
