Incident Response

THE DEFINITION

Coordinated actions to prepare for, detect, contain, eradicate, and recover from a cybersecurity incident.

In simple terms

Incident response is the plan and teamwork used when a security problem is suspected or confirmed.

Technical explanation

The process includes analysis, containment decisions, evidence handling, recovery, and lessons learned, adapted to the event and organization.

Response is iterative: new evidence can change the suspected scope, containment choice, and communication plan. Roles, decision authority, and records should be established before a crisis.

Examples in practice

A business isolates an infected computer, preserves logs, restores clean files, and reviews the entry point.

After isolating the first infected computer, logs reveal use of a shared administrator account. Responders expand the investigation, rotate that credential, and confirm which systems it accessed.

Why it matters

Preparation reduces confusion and helps limit damage during an event.
