Risk Assessment

THE DEFINITION

A structured evaluation of possible harm, likelihood, and existing safeguards.

In simple terms

A risk assessment asks what could go wrong, how bad it would be, and what is already in place.

Technical explanation

It identifies assets, threats, vulnerabilities, impacts, and control effectiveness to help prioritize treatment.

An assessment records assumptions, the affected asset, plausible threat events, existing controls, and the consequences of failure. Likelihood and impact estimates should be revisited when exposure, business use, or evidence changes.

Examples in practice

A clinic compares the impact of losing scheduling access with the likelihood and recoverability of that outage.

The clinic learns that its appointment system has a single identity provider dependency. It funds an offline intake procedure and tests it, then updates the assessment after the provider changes its recovery commitment.

Why it matters

Limited time and budget should go first to the risks that matter most.
