Vulnerability
A weakness that could be exploited or triggered to harm a system or its information.

In simple terms
A vulnerability is a flaw or gap that could give an attacker an opening.
Technical explanation
Weaknesses can arise in software, configuration, procedures, or physical controls; exploitability and impact vary by environment.
A weakness becomes operationally important when it exists in an affected system and a plausible path reaches it. Asset inventory, configuration, compensating controls, and vendor fixes all affect priority.
Examples in practice
An outdated web library has a flaw that lets an unauthorized user read files.
The library flaw exists in several applications, but only one exposes the vulnerable feature to users. The team inventories every installation, patches the exposed instance first, and verifies the remaining systems.
Why it matters
Finding and fixing relevant weaknesses reduces paths to compromise.
