NIST Cybersecurity Framework

Also known as NIST CSF

THE DEFINITION

A voluntary framework for organizing cybersecurity risk management outcomes.

In simple terms

The NIST CSF helps organizations describe what they do to manage cyber risk.

Technical explanation

CSF 2.0 uses the Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover functions to organize outcomes without prescribing one product or implementation.

The framework helps organizations describe desired cybersecurity outcomes and compare current and target practices. It does not certify a company or prescribe one technology stack.

Examples in practice

A small business uses the framework to find gaps in account protection and recovery planning.

The business maps its backup and supplier processes to the framework, finds an unowned recovery activity, and assigns someone to test it before the next review.

Why it matters

A common structure helps leaders discuss and prioritize security work.
