Endpoint Detection and Response

Also known as EDR

THE DEFINITION

Technology for collecting endpoint activity and supporting detection and investigation of suspicious behavior.

In simple terms

EDR watches computers and servers for signs of attack and helps responders investigate.

Technical explanation

Agents gather process, file, and network telemetry; detection rules and response actions vary by product and configuration.

EDR provides telemetry and response actions on managed devices, but coverage depends on agent health, configuration, and analyst follow-through. A detected process is only one part of an incident timeline.

Examples in practice

A security team traces a suspicious process from a downloaded file to a persistence change.

The team sees the process create a scheduled task and contact a remote host. It isolates the device, checks peer devices for the same behavior, and documents the investigation.

Why it matters

Visibility and response capability can shorten the time between intrusion and containment.
