Virtual Private Network
Also known as VPN
Technology that creates an encrypted network tunnel between endpoints over another network.

In simple terms
A VPN carries network traffic through a protected connection to another network or service.
Technical explanation
VPNs can provide remote access or traffic tunneling, but the provider and endpoint can still observe some metadata and a VPN does not make a user anonymous.
A tunnel protects traffic along a particular path and may provide access to internal resources. Its protection ends at the tunnel endpoints, so endpoint security, authorization, and provider trust still matter.
Examples in practice
A remote employee connects through a company VPN to reach an internal application.
The employee connects to an internal file share through the company VPN, but must still sign in with their own account. A stolen VPN credential alone should not grant unrestricted access to every internal system.
Why it matters
VPN design affects access control, privacy, and where DNS requests are sent.
