Security Awareness Training

THE DEFINITION

Security awareness training teaches people how to recognize, avoid, and report security risks they may encounter in their work.

In simple terms

Useful training explains practical actions, such as verifying unusual payment requests and reporting suspicious messages.

Technical explanation

A program should be role-relevant, repeated as threats and systems change, and paired with easy reporting and supportive feedback. Completion rates alone do not establish that behavior or controls improved.

Training should teach observable decisions that fit a person's role and provide a simple route to report concerns. Exercises and incident feedback show where procedures need improvement.

Examples in practice

Finance staff rehearse how to verify a vendor bank-change request through a trusted contact before sending payment.

Finance staff practice a supplier bank-change scenario and use a saved contact number to verify it. The company measures whether staff followed that procedure, not just whether they completed a course.

Why it matters

People can spot and report some threats early when they know the expected process and feel safe asking for help.
