Recovery Point Objective
Recovery point objective is the target point in time to which data must be recoverable after a disruption, expressing acceptable potential data loss.

In simple terms
If the RPO is one hour, the business plans to recover data no older than one hour before the outage.
Technical explanation
RPO drives backup or replication frequency and must be compared with tested recovery results. It is a target for data currency, not the time required to restart the service.
RPO describes the oldest acceptable recovered data point relative to disruption. Meeting it requires backup or replication frequency plus proof that the data can be restored intact.
Examples in practice
A billing system with a fifteen-minute RPO needs a recovery method that can restore transactions to within that window.
A system has a fifteen-minute RPO but only hourly backups. The mismatch triggers a design change and a restore test that measures the actual recovered transaction point.
Why it matters
Choosing an RPO makes the tradeoff between data loss, cost, and recovery design explicit.
