Data Minimization
Collecting and retaining only personal data necessary for a defined purpose.

In simple terms
If the service does not need a piece of personal information, avoid collecting or keeping it.
Technical explanation
Minimization limits fields, access, retention, and downstream sharing according to a legitimate purpose.
Minimization should be applied throughout a record's life: collect only necessary fields, limit copies and access, and delete data when its purpose ends. Retention needs a documented basis.
Examples in practice
An event sign-up asks for an email address but not a birth date it will never use.
The sign-up form removes birth date, and the event team deletes attendee contact details after the agreed follow-up period. A smaller dataset also reduces breach exposure.
Why it matters
Less unnecessary data means less information to protect or lose.
