Cloud Tenant Isolation

THE DEFINITION

Cloud tenant isolation is the separation of one customer's data and operations from another customer's in a shared cloud service.

In simple terms

Multiple customers may use the same platform. The service must keep each customer accounts, files, and requests inside the right boundary.

Technical explanation

Isolation can use separate projects or accounts, resource policies, per-tenant identities, network boundaries, and application-level authorization. The appropriate design depends on trust level and the provider isolation guarantees.

Isolation keeps one customer's resources and data from another's despite shared infrastructure. It depends on provider boundaries and application-level identity, data partitioning, and authorization.

Examples in practice

A SaaS service stores each customer's documents separately and checks tenant identity again when retrieving files for an AI assistant.

A SaaS application includes tenant ID in every document query and verifies it against the session. A test account from one tenant cannot retrieve a document belonging to another.

Why it matters

One missed tenant check can expose data across customers even when the cloud infrastructure itself is functioning correctly.
