Cloud Security Posture Management

THE DEFINITION

Cloud security posture management is the ongoing discovery and assessment of cloud configuration against defined security rules or standards.

In simple terms

A posture tool inventories cloud resources, highlights risky settings, and helps teams track fixes. A finding still needs context and an owner.

Technical explanation

CSPM checks can evaluate identities, public access, encryption, and logging across accounts. Coverage and freshness depend on which accounts, regions, services, and checks are enabled; a clean dashboard is not proof of complete security.

CSPM tools compare cloud configurations against rules and inventory, then surface findings for review. A finding needs asset context and validation; a dashboard cannot correct ownership or business exceptions by itself.

Examples in practice

A CSPM finding flags a bucket that permits public access and assigns the cloud team to verify whether that access is intended.

The tool flags a publicly reachable database. The owner confirms that the database is not intended for public use, closes the network path, and checks whether any access occurred.

Why it matters

Continuous configuration review catches drift that a one-time launch checklist cannot.
