Availability

THE DEFINITION

The ability of authorized users to access information or services when needed.

In simple terms

An important service should be there when people need it.

Technical explanation

Availability depends on resilience, monitoring, backups, capacity, and recovery planning.

Availability concerns timely usable access, not merely whether a server is powered on. Teams examine dependencies such as identity providers, networks, suppliers, and data stores, then test capacity and recovery paths.

Examples in practice

A retailer keeps a backup checkout system ready during an outage.

During a cloud outage, the retailer can accept orders through a documented alternate process and reconcile them when service returns. A restore test confirms that the backup system can actually process orders.

Why it matters

Even confidential and accurate data is less useful when nobody can reach it.
